Kai lazily swiveled around in his seat. Lately it felt like he'd been overlooked, which kind of sucked. Well, maybe not overlooked, per se, but like he had been shunted off to the side. As if he was a side character in a story that had grown to the point that the focus was off of characters who had once been important. Granted, Kai had never been a main character. Never in his life. Kai was a middle child with an older brother and a younger sister. His sister (Shiori) had been normal, no psychic powers whatever, but she had been the apple of his parents' eyes. In their opinion Shiori could do no wrong. And Ichiro had been the first son, with moderate psychic powers. He had gotten the attention from their parents, the push to develop and achieve.

Kai had been on the fast road to nowhere when he had met Kite. Kite had gone to some fancy training school on Higa, which took money and power. There were two types of people on Higa, the rich and the poor. The rich were generally haughty off-planeters on Higa to soak up the heat and UV rays and spend freely. The poor were the people who had been brought in, left behind, or born on Higa and were stuck running the tourist shops. Kai'd been born on Higa.

So had Kite, but Kai didn't know that at the time. Not that it would have mattered if he had known, Kite was still rich. At the time he had just been turned down for a job as a hotel clerk (you don't have the right talent) and he was pissed at everyone. Pissed at his brother, who had just made manager at the restaurant he worked for, pissed at Shiori who had just gone through five boyfriends in the past month, and pissed at the rich bastards who tipped cheap and flew away. So Kai picked a fight.

Needless to say, he got his ass kicked. It took a handful of more fights before Kai met Chinen hanging with Kite and not too long after that Kai was dragged under Kite's wing. Rin came later, through Chinen, and then Tanishi. Aragaki and Shiranui Kite knew from the training center. A year after the team was gathered they made their first kill.

A few years later they were a universally feared group of assassins, their name only made known to prospective clients. And then…

Well, then they'd had the Rokkaku contract and everything had gone wrong. Kite had hesitated and Kai had done their job and backed Kite up. Kai had gotten picked up by local law enforcement, which had not been part of the plan, and everything had felt totally and completely manipulated by some higher force. Eventually he'd been sprung, they'd killed Atobe and then they ran. Being a space pirate hadn't been bad. Kind of fun actually. It had, however, provided WAY too much alone time cramped up with Rin.

"Kai." A hand gripped Kai's curly red locks and yanked his head around. Kai bit back a shout and attempted to keep the box hiding the thought bomb from tumbling right out of his arms. "Don't look back. Stay looking at me." Rin was watching something over Kai's shoulder with interest.

"What is it?" Kai asked, his slightly suicidal sense of curiosity rearing its head.

"Rokkaku psychics." Rin twisted some of Kai's hair around his fingers. "They're in that book sto- shit." Rin's fingers tightened, making Kai wince. "He's here. And Eishirou's with him."

"What?!" Kai yelped and turned his head around to take a look, though he knew there was really only one 'he' that Rin would refer to with that tone in that context. Sure enough Itsuki Marehiko and Kite were standing outside what appeared to be a book shop talking. Fuck. That was why Kite had said to stay on the other side of the shopping arena, even though it was further away from Rikkai's home base and they had no idea what kind of range the thought bomb had.

Rin yanked Kai's head back around before the tall wavy haired Rokkaku psychic (…Davide? Davie?) could look their way.

"Shit." Kai muttered under his breath. If Kite and that Itsuki guy were talking again. Then… Had they had sex again? God, how messed up was Itsuki that he was still sleeping with Kite after all that had happened to him? Actually, he was messed up for just TALKING to Kite. Shouldn't he have had Kite arrested or tried to kill him or something? Kai was pretty sure he would if he had been subject to similar circumstances.

Rin tilted his head to the side and his eyes went distant, he blinked twice and Kai knew that he was receiving digital communication. Rin had one of those installed communicators, the kind that could transmit picture, video, sound, all of it directly into your brain instead of dealing with low grade tech that just projected it or something. "Sounds fine to me." Rin nodded his head slightly. "We'll head over right now, otherwise we will proceed as previously directed."

Rin nodded once, his eyes refocused on Kai's face, and then he grabbed Kai's hand and started tugging him in the direction of the ship docks.

"What?" Kai tucked the bomb under his arm and sped up so he matched Rin's pace instead of dragging behind. "We heading back to the ship?"

"Apparently Rudolph brought a surprise guest. Sengoku says that Rikkai is unlikely to allow the emissaries to leave the docking area and that whoever it is might require the full force of the bomb." Rin glanced over his shoulder and Kai's at where Kite was still standing talking to Itsuki. "I thought getting out of the area might be a good idea."

Kai didn't even bother glancing over his shoulder. "Yeah. Probably."
