If Oshitari wasn’t dead by the end of the day it was only going to be thanks to Saeki’s self control
. “They kidnapped Ittchan?!” Saeki’s self control and possibly Bane holding Ryou back. “What do you mean they kidnapped Ittchan?”

Oshitari looked cooler than a cucumber, cornered as he was by some of the top mind readers in the universe. “Simply that. The group who was behind Ojii-san’s assassination sent us a broadcast. Itsuki-kun appears unhurt.” Every word Oshitari spoke rang of truth and absolute sincerity. “The group has promised his safe return in exchange for Kai Yuujirou.”

Ryou spun away from Bane, cursing a blue streak. Aoi was blinking widely at Oshitari like he couldn’t quite believe what he had heard. Shudou sat on the edge of the table holding all of Rokkaku’s reports on their sessions with Kai.

Rokkaku had names of Kai’s group, Eishirou, Rin, Tanishi, Chinen, Aragaki, Shiranui. They even had some rough sketches of faces to work with. Still, none of them had managed to get a confession out of Kai. Not a ‘I pulled the trigger’ nor a vivid memory of shooting Ojii, just bits and pieces of misleading information. If they had not had to worry about mental stability, sometimes under intense pressure a psychic would snap, Saeki would have just hammered into Kai, but Hyotei said they wanted him undamaged.

Saeki folded his arms over his chest, thinking this through. “What are you guys going to do then?” Oshitari raised one eyebrow and radiated innocence and confusion. Saeki snorted, Oshitari was about as innocent as Saeki’s left hand. “Hyotei’s the one pulling the strings here. We’re just the mind readers.”

A slim smirk twisted across Oshitari’s lips before his calm façade was restored. “Hyotei is not planning on doing anything, yet. Kai is far too important to simply hand back to hitmen. And eventually Kai will crack.”

Hyotei didn’t care about Itsuki at all, or any of Rokkaku. Saeki knew that while political allies in public no sect were really friends. Even Seigaku and Rokkaku had been rivals at the start.

It did not help that every psychic sect differed in strength and skills. Rokkaku’s skill, cultivated by Ojii, was mind reading, which was why they worked with the police department or government during difficult cases. Hyotei, while not working directly for Sakaki Tarou; a man known for his wealth and his ruthlessness, were all controlled by him. It was an open secret that no one had any real trouble with because of Hyotei’s ability to smooth problems over.

“Did the broadcast give any sort of time limit?” Bane questioned lowly. Saeki blinked; surprised that he had been lost in thought at such a stressful time. It must be the lack of sleep, he’d need to take a nap in the break room soon.

“No time limit.” Oshitari adjusted his tie. “They did say they would be contacting us again. Top computer experts are attempting to trace the signal, but the team working with Kai is obviously good.” Oshitari glanced through the one sided mirror into the room where Kai was snoozing, his head pillowed in his arms. “You should get back to work.”

“Groggy minds are good for invading.” Ryou muttered, shoving past Oshitari. “Not for mind reading.” Despite his protests Ryou was in the interrogation room seconds later, shaking Kai awake. Saeki watched as Kai’s eyes snapped open, instantly awake.

Bane stepped up to Saeki’s side, crossing his arms over his chest. “He’s obviously had some training.”

Saeki nodded. That much was obvious from the way Kai avoided their questions. Slipping under mental shields wasn’t easy work, especially not when the person you were working with suddenly diverted their thoughts, hiding them behind banter.

“There’s something weird about it.” Bane continued. “Like double vision.”

Saeki turned to look at Bane. “Double vision?”

“I noticed it too.” Aoi piped up. Saeki glanced over at the younger man. Aoi looked a little uncomfortable, and radiated discomfort as he talked, making Saeki feel like his skin was too tight. “You probably didn’t because you’re able to think a lot faster Sae-san, so you can follow these things. But right when someone’s on the verge of a discovery it’s like everything… changes. Like a kaleidoscope.”

“Aoi why don’t you go help Ryou?” Bane asked, nodding at Ryou looking ready to bash the prisoners head into the table. Aoi gaped, then ran out the room radiating worry worry worry.

“…kaleidoscope.” Saeki murmured, ignoring the soft psychic hum from Oshitari’s occupied corner.
