kat8cha“Renji.” Yanagi looked up from his math book. Meeting Yukimura’s eyes Yanagi lifted one eyebrow questioningly.
Yukimura motioned to the empty seat next to Yanagi, and Yanagi inclined his head; giving Yukimura permission to sit.
Yukimura slid the seat out and slid into it gracefully. Yanagi waited for a forty-five seconds before broaching the silence. “Is there something you want Seiichi?”
Yukimura smiled sweetly, the type of smile that caused a small ball of fear to coalesce in Yanagi’s stomach. “I thought you should know, Genichirou and I believe that you should play doubles against Seigaku.”
“…ah.” Yanagi wasn’t sure why Yukimura felt the need to bring this up. The match line up had been decided weeks ago. “Was there anything else?”
“We’ve decided that Niou would be put to better use in singles. You’ll be playing with Kirihara.” Yukimura tipped his head to the side, and pushed a lock of hair behind his ear. “That’s it.”
Yanagi knew that the data pointed to his opponent being Inui, not only the data, but fate as well. It was inevitable now that Yanagi and his wild underclassmen would face off against Inui and his protégé. Kirihara who had been spoiling for a match against Inui since Seigaku had defeated them. “If you wanted to kill Sadaharu, you could have just hired a hitman Seiichi.”
“You know as well as I do that Akaya has not killed anyone yet, I doubt he’ll start now.” Yukimura stood, gripping Yanagi’s shoulder in a way meant to appear reassuring but in reality being possessive. “I have to go tell Niou.”
Yanagi grabbed Yukimura’s wrist, opening his eyes to stare into Yukimura’s. “Why?” Yanagi knew. He just wanted confirmation.
“You know I hate competition.” Yukimura freed his wrist from Yanagi’s grip easily, and reached over to stroke Yanagi’s head. “You should come over to Genichirou’s tonight.”
Yanagi did not bother answering. Yukimura already knew his answer.
“I’ll see you at practice Renji.”
