Believe it or not, I had a lot of friends as a kid. So, best childhood friend? Hard to choose.
First off, there was Joe from next door. He's... at college? I have no idea, actually. We did a lot of weird stuff together when we were younger. First off, since we were a boy and a girl we played House every now and then. We would pick berries off of the bushes and acorns or buckeyes off the ground and pretend they were 'food'. We used to play Sea World on my porch. We'd pretend we were swimming in the driveway or that the whales were.
He also, at one point, dumped piss on me. >> We had some interesting times.
Uh.
There was also Molly and Christina across the street. Molly lived the house across and to the left, and Christina in the house across and to the right. Down in my old closet there's a map drawn in permanent marker about that.
It's hard for me to think of them as separate people because so much of our time was spent together. I'm sure that we played with just one or the other but I just remember it always being the two of us. We liked to play Peter Pan and Tiger Lily and Wendy and of course we ALL wanted to be Wendy. We actually went to Kindergarten together up at the school, and Molly moved away about halfway through that year. I knew Christina longer, we both went to the same church, and she moved away sometime in Elementary school. I saw her now and then, I think the last time I saw her was in middle school her family drove by me and offered me a ride home.
During first grade I met Kimberly and Hannah. THEY however are easy to separate. Kimberly moves away sometime that year and I remember being so... so mad. I was seriously, seriously upset about it. I have no idea where she is now, although there's a librarian at the local library who I think is Kim's... aunt? And she used to give me updates.
Hannah was my best friend for almost all of Elementary school. I say almost because things, as always, changed. Around fourth grade or so we started to drift and by fifth I know we'd almost totally split. We were still friends, but barely. It wasn't a fight, it was just a drifting. It's funny, because Hannah was my first sleep-over, she taught me how to play poker, we went to her Grandma's bar. I spent one night of Hanukkah with her once, and was invited to her birthday parties for years. It's funny, but I think the last party I went to was sometime in middle school (we both went to the same MS and were still friends of friends) and she... literally like, fought to have me ride in the car with her.
I'm going to be honest, a lot of my memories of my friends in my life involve them fighting over me.
Hannah I actually saw in the last year, she was at Tri-C. We made mentions of hanging out, and I think her number is actually in my phone, but we never did.
After Hannah there was Clara, but I'm not sure she should be included in this because once I become best friends with her we start reaching puberty and that's not really 'childhood' anymore is it? But Clara was still one of my best friends as a child. We met in second grade, both of us used to go home for lunch, and I couldn't remember her name. I seriously regarded her as 'creepy' and 'stalkerish'. Sometime in third grade we became friends, and in fourth I knew we were fast friends.
It's funny, but in middle school she met Mikey, and we all became best friends. We were definitely a little Harry Potter-esque trio. Clara would be Hermione, but I'm not sure if Mikey would be Harry or Ron. He looks like Ron, but all things considered... plus, casting myself as the emo hero is lame.
It's hard for me to say if Mikey was really a BFF before middle school. We knew each other from PSR only, so we only hang out on Sundays. I'm pretty sure I spent most of our acquaintance terrorizing him. And I mean that seriously. Kelly and I used to terrorize the other boys in our PSR class and it was probably mostly my fault but Kelly was the brute strength. I'm positive we chased Mikey into the boy's bathroom more than once (being that it was the boy's bathroom we of course never entered.)
I'm not really sure how we became friends but it probably happened before sixth grade. Possibly in 5th? I don't remember who the PSR teacher was then but I do remember Kelly, Mikey, and I having a Tupperware container of little balls of paper to fling at the annoying kids in the class.
Mikey's working for the Metroparks now I think, I actually have his LJ on my flist. >> It sort of embarrasses me because of what I have on MY flist and I still can't believe I added him. Clara's working on becoming a minister, I believe? I actually attended a mass that she led.
I didn't really have a best friend in HS. For one thing, from 8th grade on I spent a lot of time on serious brain killing prescriptions. Also at Beaumont friendships were different. There were a few girls I was close to, but none that I would call best friends.
And now there's Traci. Also on my flist, also embarrassed about that, also have no idea why she puts up with me.
