Aug. 23rd, 2010 04:05 amIt’s true that, a microsecond after he sees John step out into his line of sight that he thinks to himself ‘oh no, not John’.
A microsecond, which for Sherlock is truly more like a minute. He thinks so much faster than the plebeians that inhabit the world.
Still, in reality, it is only a fraction of a second.
Then he realizes exactly what is going on, the bulky winter coat that was certainly not John’s, John’s stilted way of speaking, the awkward set to his shoulders, and of course John being there at all when Sherlock knew he had left for Sarah’s hours ago.
He should not have waited to meet Moriarty; he should have set the meeting time sooner. But he had needed time! Time to get to the location, time to get things set up, time to set things up so that Lestrade would be alerted at just the right time so that he could show up and arrest Moriarty.
But now, and the true horror sets in once John opens up the downy coat to reveal a vest loaded with explosives, now everything is different. Sherlock has never cared about lives on the line, his or others, but now…
John has killed for him, Sherlock will not let him be killed as well.
