The truth was he had never been a very good occultist. Oh, he had studied of course, and he kept a book of shadows like any other good little occultist (he had started it back in highschool with the other not-quite-goths), and of course he walked the walk and looked the look. But the truth of it was most of his 'occult wisdom' was BS he made up on the spot. He was really good at that, making stuff up and sticking to it and warping it so that it applied to whatever client he was dealing with. A lot of 'occultism' was in the mind anyway, people smelling a particular smell and claiming it was a ghost, or dealing with a draft, or a stray cat.
Sometimes it was serious stuff though, and that was why he had a partner.
Or, well, why his partner had him.
"Kite-san!" Itsuki found himself snagged back from a vicious swipe and held in Kite's arms. Kite was always cold, even though his skin was a tanned brown and his eyes burned with hellfire. Itsuki thought it had something to do with Kite being dead.
"Itsuki." Strange that they were still on formal terms after the work they had done together and after the messes they had endured.
And especially after their first meeting.
"Leave this one to me." Black wings sprouted from Kite's back and flared outward, blocking out the sparkling stars ahead. The fox demon yowled (and really, should fox demons yowl? Well, Itsuki wasn't sure. He had never actually met one beforeā¦) and leapt at the two of them. Kite's wings swept once, twice, big gusts of air pushing down and blowing the fox demon off balance as Kite lifted up in the air. Kite placed Itsuki down on the branch of one of the shrine's tall trees before he closed his wings close to his body and plummeted to the ground.
Itsuki grasped the rough bark of the trunk with both hands and leaned over to watch the battle below. The case had all started with a young priest (a serious young one with glasses and well kept brown hair) had called their office to tell them about a demon stealing his dreams. Itsuki had figured it was a case of insomnia, because WHY would a demon need to steal dreams? But Kite had kept silent and thought things to himself.
Probably about why a demon would need to steal dreams. He didn't like to share with Itsuki.
White and black circled on the ground like ying and yang, Kite's human form flickering with the shadowy form of a hell hound. The fox yowled and Kite growled and the two forms leapt at each other, the clash of their meeting shattering the shrine's windows and causing Itsuki to cling to the tree he was stuck in.
In a small black box miles and a dark portal away, half of Itsuki's heart skipped a beat in time with the half still remaining in Itsuki's chest.
