Mar. 18th, 2010 01:16 amIt happens the day after he and Mikado talk to Takiguchi. Kida receives and e-mail on his cell-phone from an unknown address. He is not really in the habit of looking at messages from people he does not know, but something compels him to open it. In truth it was probably his 'gut' again, and just like how it had been right about Takiguchi…
'Would you like to join the Dollars?'
Kida closes his cell-phone. When Kida flips it open again and checks his inbox the text message is still there, bright as day. 'Would you like to join the Dollars?'
He doesn't respond. He is not sure how to respond. Mikado was the one who wished to join the Dollars, and it was the last thing Kida wanted him to do. Joining the Dollars himself might give him information that he could use to keep Mikado safe but…
How had this person, whoever it was, gotten his number? Was it Takiguchi? No, Kida doubted that. But it was a Dollars member who had found out he was snooping. Snooping because of Mikado, because he wanted to keep Mikado safe.
But the Dollars were loosely organized, or so Takiguchi said. Joining did not mean that he would be able to keep Mikado safe. And if he joined… it would be going back over to the shadows again.
No. Kida did not want to join. He wanted to send a reply right back to whoever had asked and tell them no. But whoever sent the invite might know about Kida's past as the head of the Yellow Turbans, or might have sent an e-mail to Mikado too. He couldn't let Mikado do something like join the Dollars without back up.
So he waited. He waited until the next day.
"Mi~ka~do!" Kida greeted his best friend with a casual wave and an elongated shout out. Mikado sheepishly waved back.
"Good morning Kida-kun."
Casually, Kida engaged Mikado in conversation, waiting for the perfect time to spring his trap. It came when they entered the school gates. "Did you get any weird text messages yesterday?" Kida teased. "Like from," Kida's voice dropped into a whisper, "the Dollars?"
Mikado looked honestly surprised. "No! …why? Did Kida-kun?"
Ah. So, Mikado had not been contacted. Well, that answered his question, and firmed his resolve. He would send a negative reply. "Noooooooooooooope! Not a thing!" Kida tipped his head back to smile at the sky, and missed the brief shadow that passed over Mikado's face.
