May. 31st, 2009 05:27 amThey never do get an answer for why Byakuran's actions, why the way he is now, is Shouichi's fault. Tsuna's heard it twice, once from the adult Gokudera, once from Irie Shouichi himself, and he still doesn't understand it. How could Irie Shouichi make Byakuran into what he was? The younger Vongola family is sucked back to their present time shortly after the Millefiore's defeat, once they have obtained the Mare rings and the pacifiers. They hand things off to Dino-san for safe keeping, and Irie Shouichi, sweat still on his brow and shaking a little after the fighting comes over to clap Tsuna on his shoulder…
And everyone finds themselves back in Namimori before they know it.
In the dark of the night when Tsuna has nothing better to think about, he wonders if that timeline still exists, if timelines of future events that will be changed continues to exist or if they disappear. Time travel is weird, he doesn't half understand it, and the Lambo who visits them from 10 years in the future is different now, more mature, less prone to accidents, less prone to random attacks. It's nice, but weird, and Tsuna kind of misses the old 15 year old Lambo, with his savoir-faire and cowardice.
Every time Tsuna involves himself with the Vongola, he keeps in mind the dark future his life, everyone's life, could have been. He doesn't destroy the rings, he doesn't even consider it except to say 'that is not something I will do.'
Irie Shouichi and Byakuran Gesso are watched. They're labeled as 'threats' but not immediate ones, not ones that can't be carefully handled. They're low-level threats, but the rule is that *at no point should Irie Shouichi and Byakuran Gesso ever meet*. The two of them are fated to live different lives than they had before, Byakuran growing up to inherit his family, and if he gets ambitious…
He'll be dead.
Reborn is intent on steering Shouichi into the Vongola, and for the first time Tsuna sees someone fight Reborn's recruiting methods and win. Or at least, not lose. The younger Irie Shouichi hates Tsuna, or is deathly afraid of him, and he runs at the sight of Reborn. He doesn't take it well when he has a gun in his face either, and when Tsuna tries to talk to him about 'the future' and 'time travel' he just blanches. He gets sick when Tsuna is near him, curling an arm protectively over his stomach and sometimes experiencing dry heaves or vomiting. Reborn tells Tsuna it's nervousness, that Irei'll grow out of that, that they'll have him in the familiy and working with Gianini in no time.
Tsuna's not so sure.
Call it hyper intuition, call it whatever you want, but Tsuna can see that this Irie Shouichi won't be his friend, not unless something changes.
It takes 8 years from when they return to the present for Irie Shouichi to slip their leash, running until he's off the radar. They lose him somewhere in America, and he doesn't pop up again until 5 months later… when he reemerges as the most trusted subordinate of Byakuran Gesso. Tsuna's eyes meet Reborn's over the breakfast table when this news is delivered, and Reborn tips his hat back questioningly. Tsuna's never seen the Vongola fail to assassinate someone yet, and the visions of the older Gokudera, shaking and clinging to his coffin, of Yamamoto, his sad eyes and his father's death. He thinks about Colenello dead, and Lal Mirch unhappy. Tsuna thinks about the fear in the older Kyoko's eyes.
He nods his head.
It's the first time the Vongola fails to assassinate one of Tsuna's enemies, the first time the Vongola has failed an assassination in years. Irie Shouichi protected Byakuran Gesso from their attacks, some new kind of bullet proof glass, some kind of defensive machinery. Tsuna looks at Reborn, and turns to look at Gokudera, Yamamoto, Ryohei, Chrome, Lambo… he orders Yamamoto to take care of it, and Yamamoto smiles that same smile.
Tsuna's pretty sure he's thinking about his dad too.
It takes a year, and even then Byakuran is not dead. He is alive, barely, lying in one of the Vongola's hospitals, his vitals monitored and an IV hooked up to his arm. He is sapped of strength, and has light burns covering his entire body. The burns are an accident actually, caused by Irie Shouichi himself, although Irie had been trying to attack at the time.
He just hadn't been attacking Byakuran.
Tsuna has heard from various people how the scene at the Giglio Nero retreat had played out. It wasn't Genkishi, but Spanner who had come over to Irie's side, the older man as easily swayed by fascinating puzzles as Tsuna remembered him. Byakuran was pressed against a wall, the young Uni behind him. Apparently Irie's actions, the ones that weren't solely as a reaction to attacks on the Gesso, had slipped by Byakuran, had *undermined* Byakuran. Apparently in this timeline Byakuran wasn't their enemy, but Irie was.
Some part of Tsuna aches at the thought.
Irie had apparently collected the sun mare ring already, and was talking to Byakuran, coaxing him to take the sky ring from Uni. 'I can't be the sky, Byakuran-san, please take it.'
'Shou-chan, what you're doing is wrong.'
Byakuran had taken Shouichi's attack meant for Uni, just when the Vongola arrived, and Shouichi had fled.
'I'll come back for you, Byakuran-san.'
Human existence changed people. There was a theory somewhere, some scientific theory, about how just watching an experiment changed things. Friendships changed people. Perhaps, by creating Byakuran, Shouichi changed himself. And maybe they could have handled the relationship between Byakuran and Shouichi better if they had observed it themselves. Whatever the case may be, it was too late to change it now, and there was no Irie Shouichi to figure out the logistics of dragging a younger Vongola family to the future to fix the current family's mistakes. Tsuna would have to do it himself this time.
Again.
