"What do you think," Spanner asked, sitting down beside Shouichi in the Vongola's kitchen, "do you think we have a chance?" It was the last night before the Vongola and the Millefiore began to attack each other again. It was a half hour before midnight, when the day would officially start. Considering what had happened before it wasn't surprising that only a handful of the Vongola had been able to fall asleep peacefully. The Vongola himself, the storm, and the rain guardians were all sitting in the meeting hall playing cards, each of them swearing to catch half hour naps in a cycle if it came to that. The mist girl was curled up in a couch with a sleeping Lightening guardian separating her from the curled up form of the sun guardian's sister at the other end.

"A chance?" Shouichi had a steaming cup of coffee held in his hands. Spanner had noticed that since coming to the Vongola he had stopped drinking canned coffee and started drinking coffee from a coffee pot. Had Shouichi worried at the Millefiore about poisoning? Drugs? Or was it just a matter of accessibility and the sheer amount of coffee Shouichi drank to keep himself going? "I don't know."

Spanner shrugged and slumped down sit on the floor. Seconds later Shouichi joined him and they leaned back, resting their asses on the tile floor and their backs on the Vongola's kitchen cabinets. "Ten days ago," Spanner drew a lollipop out of his pocket and tore the plastic off of it crinkling the clear material between two fingers, "I'd have said no."

Shouichi nodded, and then sipped his coffee slowly, the steam rising to fog his glasses and hide his eyes from view. "And now?"

It had been surprising watching the Vongola train. They were kids, teenagers, and they shouldn't have had to take anything this seriously. But they did. All of them took it seriously, even when they weren't the serious type. The sun guardian, who had managed to crawl into his bed and fall right into a deep peaceful sleep, had thrown himself into training the minute he had heard about the death of his former master. The cloud brat, who kept wandering off on his own and never seemed to pay any attention to them had an intensity about him that spoke ill for any of the Millefiore that got in his way.

And the Vongola… the Vongola had a strength that came from deep inside of him that Spanner would never be able to measure.

"Now? …I think Byakuran's going to get what's coming to him."
