Niou was used to his father coming to sit down for dinner and bringing his work with him. Inevitably his father would tap the pile of papers on the table to get them straightened and then would lay them down.
All his life Niou had watched his father pick up the chopsticks in his left hand, his weaker hand, and shovel food into his mouth while signing his name to paperwork with his right. Niou had figured it was safe to invite Yagyuu over for dinner, some studying because Yagyuu was a prick, and a little make out time. It was a two months after the incident of his mother walking in on them. She hadn't made another comment about it, and neither his sister Chizuru hadn't mentioned anything. Ginjiro hadn't said anything either, but he hadn't been suspiciously quiet. Niou had felt he was in the clear.

Niou's father tapped the papers, and then closed the manila folder the papers were held in. Niou's eyes bugged, Chizuru choked on her sip of water, and Ginjiro's mouth hung open. At the foot of the table Niou's mother smiled mischievously and folded a napkin over her lap.

Yagyuu looked unphased.

"Yagyuu-kun." Niou's father picked up his chopsticks with his right hand. "I hear your father is a doctor."

Niou, Chizuru, and Ginjiro remained frozen in a tableau of astonishment, but Niou's eyes were beginning to narrow, and then to slant towards his mother.

"Yes." Yagyuu's chopsticks clinked against his plate as he grasped at some rice. "He has his own practice."

Niou's father stuffed a piece of chicken into his mouth, a bit of sauce dotting his chin. "Are you planning to follow in your father's footsteps?" Niou's grip tightened on his chopsticks. He was going to have to hurt someone, and unfortunately he couldn't hurt either of his parents. Ginjiro and Chizuru had begun eating at a very careful pace.

"Dear." Niou's mother motioned to her own chin. "You have a bit of sauce on your chin."

"Oh?" Niou's father picked up the napkin and dabbed at the wrong side of his chin. "Did I get it?"

Sighing Niou's mother stood up and walked around the table. "Allow me, dear." She knelt down on the side of the table that Yagyuu was seated at and taking Niou's father's napkin she brushed the sauce off his chin. "Be more careful."

"Of course." Niou's father smiled at Niou's mother, their fingers brushing when he took the napkin back. "Now, Yagyuu-kun, are you planning to stay at Rikkai for University?"

Niou's mother stood, patting Yagyuu's shoulder in support. Niou gave his mother a very sulky look. Niou couldn't believe she had told his father.

"I am." Yagyuu still looked blank. Niou knew though that he was laughing on the inside, Niou could always tell. "I plan on continuing at Rikkai through high school and university. After that I will go to X Medical School. My father will bring me into his practice and I will take it over for him eventually." Yagyuu bowed his head. "If I do not go corporate. My sister is studying to be a doctor as well."

Niou's father kept nodding his head as he ate. "It must be nice having children who follow in your footsteps." Niou looked over at his sister and his brother. Both of them were avoiding his eyes. "Masarahu refuses."

"His skills lie in other paths, Niou-san." Yagyuu looked at Niou.

Niou glared at Yagyuu. Oh man, he was totally not blowing Yagyuu ever again. Niou KNEW what Yagyuu was referring to.

"Niou-kun is an exceptional artist." Yagyuu's lips twitched. Yagyuu had provided the screws, though not the screwdriver, for Niou's latest piece of abstract art. Niou actually really liked his latest work, it was very now, and a pretty good satiric representation of that bratty Echizen Ryoma. In a few years it might even be worth money. It was currently decorating Yukimura's garden, scaring off any birds.

Niou's mother chuckled lightly and took a sip of tea. "He never shows us his sketch books."

Mainly because they were filled with half-naked pictures of Yagyuu.

"They're no good mom." Niou poked at his dinner before setting his chopsticks down. "I'm done, can we be excused?" Yagyuu didn't complain, merely set his chopsticks on the chopstick rest next to his half finished plate. Niou's mother waved them off and, grabbing Yagyuu's wrist, Niou jogged up to his room.

Behind him he could hear his father moaning, "I did not even get to ask if they would consider adoption!"
