Itsuki insisted. Itsuki was holding a marshmallow in one hand and a skewer in the other. “Kite-san you can’t say you didn’t!”
Kite’s skewer had already pierced the marshmallow and was now hovering close to the camp fire. There were a mix of their friends surrounding the campfire, men who came from both junior high schools, people Itsuki and Kite had met in college, and close work friends as well. Their fifth anniversary party had done rather well. Kite had only had to pull Rokkaku’s former captain off Kai once, after the swift sharp smack to the back of the head Kai had refrained from picking on any of the old Rokkaku team.
“I claim nothing, Itsuki.” Even after five years Kite and Itsuki still called each other by their last names. In public at least, in the bedroom Kite could coax a reluctant ‘Eishirou’ from Itsuki, and he indulged in calling Itsuki ‘Marehiko’. “But I do believe it was your doing.”
“It was not.” Itsuki poked the stick through his marshmallow and let it hover near the fire. “You were the one who approached me Kite-san.”
Several party goers were watching the debate in earnest.
Kite shook his head with a small smile. “Only after you made yourself approachable.”
Itsuki pouted, and Kite directed his gaze towards his browning marshmallow. Perfect. Retracting the skewer Kite pulled the marshmallow off with as little mess as possible. Kite than popped the marshmallow into Itsuki’s mouth. “Don’t pout.”
Itsuki chewed the marshmallow, and then squeaked through a mouthful of marshmallow when he realized that his own marshmallow had caught fire. Kite pulled Itsuki’s skewer out and blew the flaming marshmallow out. Then Kite took a bite, the sweet gooey marshmallow bursting through the crisp black burned crust. Itsuki swallowed his mouthful of mallow and grinned at Kite.
“It was definitely your fault.”
