Osamu could have been a nobel fucking prize winner. He was brilliant, he knew he was. Everyone had known he was. He’d aced his highschool courses, his tests, his trials. Osamu’d gotten into Tokyo University and he was on the fast track to a successful high paying career at a research company.
The freedom of the first year of college took its toll. It was limited freedom, Osamu still lived at home, his parents still hovered over him, but it was enough freedom that he could screw up. He picked the wrong courses, trusted the guidance counselors who knew nothing about him, and struggled. He pulled through that first year.
The second year was harder.
The wrong crowd picked Osamu up at that point. Osamu did drugs, went to parties, got drunk, got arrested. His parents censured him, scolded him, and eventually sent him off to his Aunt in Osaka. He took a ‘break’ got himself clean… and realized he couldn’t go back to Tokyo.
And now, he was coaching a Junior High tennis team. Granted his coaching was brilliant, but it was still a Junior High tennis team. Osamu’s brilliant teaching was wasted on the brats, they didn’t get literature at all. Still, it was penance. If Osamu had just stuck it through at college…
Well, he might have a steady girlfriend.
