Edmund watched them, the two who were born to lead.
Caspian, dark skinned and dark eyed with hair as black as night, and Peter, the sun to Edmund’s moon, the rising dawn to Caspian’s midnight. Peter who had never before been tempted by the White Witch and her lies and illusions, who had fought against her at Aslan’s side. Peter who was now standing before her, trapped in the White Witch’s gaze. Edmund could understand why Caspian had been tempted. Ever seen their return Caspian had been overshadowed by ‘High King Peter’
Edmund stood behind the thick wall of ice, ignored by the White Witch as she focused her whiles on Peter. Edmund could see Peter hazily through the ice and the Witch’s ghost. Peter’s eyes were large in his face as he stared up into the Witch’s eyes. Edmund raised his sword and struck to kill. The wall of ice shattered and the Witch screamed. Peter’s gaze dropped to meet Edmund’s then, when the Witch’s ghost was gone and Peter was gathering his wits about him once again. “I know, you had it handled.”
Peter’s face changed then, flushing with anger and his jaw setting stubbornly. It was this anger and stubbornness that had gotten Peter beaten up day, after day, after day, back in England. It was this anger and stubbornness that was going to kill them all. Edmund turned away from the fire at his back and allowed Peter to glare instead at Aslan’s stony visage. Stepping over Caspian’s sprawled form Edmund walked out of the cavern. Caspian would get up eventually, and they could set about getting the world sorted out right again. Edmund missed the simplicity of Narnia of old, where Dwarves were Dwarves and Men were few and far between.
