Minami’s scent was leading them towards the apartment complex of his friend.
Akutsu snarled beside Higashikata, the scents of too many bodies, and the knowledge that they were surrounded by the warm press of humanity irritated Akutsu. Higashikata paused a block away from the complex, watching the whirring lights of an ambulance speed by. The scent was stronger here, like Minami had walked back the way he had come…
Minami must not have stayed at the apartment long.
Akutsu grabbed the back of Higashikata’s shirt and began tugging him in a new direction, a direction that followed the scent of Minami, overlaid with the smell of freshly spilled blood. Higashikata’s mouth watered at the scent, he had yet to feed tonight.
“I am not dealing with any hunters.” Akutsu snarled at Higashikata. “You and your idiot can handle them on your own.”
Higashikata ducked his head. “I am sure he did not kill anyone.” New vampires had to be strictly controlled, and it was quite possible that Minami had killed someone. Higashikata hoped not, Minami would be traumatized by that. “The hunters in Tokyo are too busy to investigate everything.”
Akutsu punched the back of Higashikata’s head, and Higashikata stumbled. It was only the knowledge that Akutsu would beat him up and then dump him in the street without finding Minami that kept Higashikata from snarling. “Pathetic.” Akutsu muttered and walked past Higashikata.
Maybe it was fate, or maybe it was Minami’s instincts, but he was curled up in the alley where Higashikata had bit him. Minami was curled into a ball, his arms tight around his knees. The young vampire was breathing harshly.
“Minami.” Higashikata called out. Minami started, looking up at Akutsu and Higashikata with eyes large and shiny with fear and tears.
“You’re the one who did this to me!” Minami unfolded with a grace he would never have had before death. “You killed me, you made me this… whatever I am!”
Vampire. Higashikata could read the world in Minami’s eyes. Minami knew then.
“Tch.” Akutsu darted forward, his hand swinging in a backhand slap across Minami’s face. Minami went down, black blooming quickly over his cheek before beginning to fade. Akutsu had been holding back. “You keep your pet under control.”
“Aku-” Higashikata stopped when Akutsu turned angry eyes towards him. There was a shimmer in the air, and then Akutsu was gone. No doubt off to find a good fight. “Minami.”
Minami cringed away from Higashikata’s touch. Though Higashikata’s heart had long since stopped beating, he found out that it could still break.
