Chinen watched the smoke from his cigarette curl up towards the night sky.
He was leaning against a half opened metal door, the metal cold against his back. The night was warm, with just a hint of chill, but Chinen was used to far warmer climates. Even if he was genetically engineered to withstand cold ones. Inside the room emotions boiled over.
Rin was never terribly good at shielding in the first place, but then again reading Rin tended to be like listening to a radio station with nothing to tune it with but a wire coat hanger. Thoughts ended up garbled, but emotions came through strong and clear. Chinen was getting sick and tired of dealing with worry worry worry. Kite had a plan, and that was cool with Chinen, Kite’s plans always worked out… in the end anyway.
Dropping his butt to the floor Chinen ground his heel into it. He wished they had chosen a different locale for this hit, somewhere closer to Yamabuki space station. Chinen’d love to swing by and talk to his favorite informant-slash-boyfriend.
Chinen kicked the door shut when he stepped back into the room, the clanging noise startling Tanishi out of his seat. “Hey.” Chinen nodded at where Rin was pacing in front of their computer monitors, his eyes scanning them for news before he turned away cursing, only to return a few seconds later. “I’m ready to get some rope.”
“To keep him still?” Tanishi unwrapped a stick of jerkey and offered it to Chinen, digging in when Chinen turned him down. “I think I have a pair of handcuffs somewhere.”
“…” Chinen let that statement sit there for a second, long enough for Tanishi’s eyes to widen in realization. “Kinky, Tanishi.”
Tanishi flushed an ugly red and curled in on himself, his shoulders hunching forward and his chin disappearing into his neck. “It’s not like that.”
Chinen didn’t need to be a mind reader to see the negative aura Tanishi was projecting. Being a psychic just helped. “Really? I always assumed you and Kai had a thing.”
“Rin and Kai have a thing.” Tanishi stated with a snort. “Kai and I have a not-thing.”
Chinen let that statement hang in the air as well, waiting for Tanishi to pick it back up and explain it. Chinen did not bother with his teammates social lives, the only one he worried about was Eishirou, and that was mainly because Kite didn’t have a social life to speak of.
“Kai likes me like a friend. And Rin’s… weird. So when Rin gets too bitchy or starts ignoring him or something Kai comes to me for comfort.” Tanishi’s shoulders slumped even further. “I don’t even get sex but I’m the other man.”
Chinen didn’t bother to pat Tanishi’s back reassuringly. Kai and Rin had been close since before Higa was formed, and their relationship was cemented in a harrowing mission under Higa’s former leader. Tanishi was cool, a nice guy, and strong, but Rin was a stuck up brat who couldn’t stand ‘fatties’. And Tanishi was hopelessly crushing on both Kai and Rin.
It was a pathetic situation really.
“Hey.” Tanishi nudged Chinen in the ribs. “He’s staring again.”
Chinen glanced at Kite, unsurprised to find that Tanishi was right. Kite was staring at the door where they were keeping the mind reader from Rokkaku. “He’ll go in soon.” Chinen thought about the slight tick in Eishirou’s left eye since he had extracted the Rokkaku member’s passcodes. “Very soon.”
