When Hiyoshi got home the house smelled like gouya.
Hiyoshi had long ago discovered that his stomach could both curdle, and sink at the same time. This was because the smell of gouya could only mean one thing.

His family was in town.

This, compounded with rumors Hiyoshi had heard of an Okinawan ‘hitman’ meant that Hiyoshi’s cousin had to be in town.

Fuck, fuck, double fuck.

“I’m home.” Hiyoshi called out, toeing off his shoes and placing them beside the unfamiliar sneakers in the shoe rack. Walking towards the kitchen, and wrinkling his nose as the gouya smell got stronger, Hiyoshi looked around for his mother. “Kaa-san?”

“Wakashi!” Hiyoshi found himself enfolded in a hug, his mother’s bony shoulder smashing his nose straight into his face. “You’re home late.”

“I had a practice…” Hiyoshi muttered. Gakuto had kept him after playing against Shishido and Ohtori to prep for playing Seigaku.. Hiyoshi really hated losing, but with Shishido and Ohtori also improving their doubles play constantly… Hiyoshi and Gakuto were left in the dust. They had a good chance of beating Seigaku though, and Hiyoshi never went into a match thinking he would lose.

Hiyoshi’s mother tutted and ruffled his hair. “Into the kitchen Wakashi.” Hiyoshi hesitated, but his mother grabbed his shoulders and pushed him into the kitchen. Unsurprisingly Eishirou was seated at the kitchen table. When he saw Hiyoshi enter the room he pushed his glasses up, the kitchen lighting glinting off of them.

“Hello again, Wakashi.”

Hiyoshi scowled. “Eishirou.” His mother hit the back of his head. Gritting his teeth Hiyoshi tried again. “It’s been a while, cousin.”

His mother seemed to deem that acceptable and shepherded Hiyoshi into the seat across from Kite. “Wakashi, Eishirou-kun is in town because his tennis team has entered nationals, just like yours!”

“Really?” Hiyoshi glanced at the smug face of his cousin. Kite smirked.

“We’re facing Seigaku this weekend.” Kite pushed his glasses up again. “And hopefully Hyotei after that.”

Hiyoshi stifled a twitch. He’d heard about the dark horse Okinawan team but… “Whatever.” It didn’t matter, he bet Kite’s team got pummeled by Seigaku. It was just the way Seigaku was. And there was no way Echizen Ryoma was going to lose to someone as lame as Hiyoshi’s cousin.

“Wakashi!” Hiyoshi’s mother turned, wielding a spoon dripping scalding water. Hiyoshi instinctively ducked, saving himself from minor facial burns. “Don’t speak to your cousin that way.” Planting her hands on her hips, the spoon stuck off to the side, Hiyoshi’s mother frowned.

“…sorry.” Hiyoshi forced himself to apologize, even though apologizing to Eishirou always made him feel sick.

Kite looked at Hiyoshi blankly, always so good at being the family favorite. “Apology accepted.”

“Thanks better.” Hiyoshi’s mother smiled. "Wakashi! You should show your cousin around Hyotei tomorrow.”

Hiyoshi choked on his own spit.
