It is difficult to be the one who watches. It is easy, at first, to fade back from people, to be, not shy, but not friendly. People accept it. You become part of the background, white noise even. It is more difficult as time goes on, when you want to assert yourself. You’ve become a piece of scenery to the people around you, and cannot escape the stigma. It does not even take long for you to be stamped as a wallflower, months, or weeks, or days.
“Yanagi-kun.” Yukimura tapped on Yanagi’s shoulder, smiling sweetly at him. “Keep staring and you’ll go blind.”
“I don’t know what you mean, Yukimura-kun.” Yanagi turns away from his fellow first year, he shoulders his racket and watches the other members of Rikkai play.
“Mmm. Do you want to come out with Sanada and I after school?”
Yanagi turns his head, his eyes opened slightly in surprise. Yukimura smiles wider.
“Good. We’re going to Sanada’s house to study. You can help us on our math.”
