Chitose had been waiting to get back into school.
Mom and Dad had said that he’d need to transfer, they wanted to take him somewhere where he could recover the use of his eye. Chitose was cool with that, really he was, he’d like to be able to see out of both eyes again, but Chitose needed closure.
Chitose needed to talk to Kippei again.
The idiot wasn’t answering his phone though, and Chitose’s parents, as much as they thought he could run his own life, weren’t about to drive him over to Kippei’s house. And Chitose doubted he could manage the walk on his own half blind. Miyuki wasn’t being any help either, having decided that she hated Kippei for hurting Chitose.
“Hey, dudes.” Chitose gave a brief wave to some of his teammates.
“Chitose!” The teammates perked up. “Does this mean you’re coming back?” Their glances went from hopeful to nervous when they spotted his eye patch.
“No, I’ve still quit tennis, and school apparently. Just here to pick up my stuff.” Shrugging Chitose nodded in the direction of the lost and found. “I know half of that’s got to be mine.”
“O-oh…” Two pairs of shoulder slumped and Chitose felt a little guilty. These guys had been hoping to be a doubles team next year, and with Chitose practically assured he’d be captain they knew they’d have the best training.
“Hey, you seen Kippei?” Chitose asked, finding the Totoro pencil case he’d lost at the beginning of the year. The two Shishigaku players went quiet, and still.
“You mean… you don’t know?” One of them squeaked out. Staring into the lost and found box Chitose picked up a familiar looking silver stud.
“Obviously I don’t dude, enlighten me.”
Fingers curling around the earring Chitose was pretty sure that yes, he did know.
