Tanishi really liked the internet.
Tanishi liked it almost as much as he liked those limited edition shrimp chips his mom had bought last week. People he talked to on the internet had no way of knowing that he was overweight, or that he had a bad hair cut, or how sweaty he was because his mom was trying to conserve energy by shutting off the air conditioner once a week.
But currently Tanishi liked the internet because it hid the fact that he came from Higa.
blowyournose: We had a beach volleyball tournament today. It was fun.
facestuffer300: no one got pantsed like that time you played that tokyo team right?
blowyournose: No. But I think Davide might have pantsed Bane-san afterwards. There was a lot of yelling.
It wasn’t that Tanishi was ashamed of going to Higa. In fact, he was really proud of it. Being a Higa Chuu middle school student got Tanishi all sorts of respect from the other guys in Okinawa. But it wasn’t something that would impress Itsuki. Tanishi hadn’t realized he was talking to one of those guys from Rokkakku, and Tanishi hadn’t even remembered the name, until Itsuki had mentioned their coach.
blowyournose: Oji made new rackets today for the next team.
facestuffer300: your coach makes you rackets?
blowyournose: Best rackets in Chiba!
And then it had all clicked, because of course Tanishi had to be chatting with the one tennis team in Chiba that Higa had beaten the crap out of. And of course Itsuki had to be the sweetest, nicest guy Tanishi had ever talked to, even if Tanishi couldn’t put a face to the name. If Itsuki was a girl, Tanishi would have married him.
Itsuki liked to cook.
blowyournose: Finals for Culinary Arts was easy!
facestuffer300: what’d you make?
blowyournose: We had to make an entrée of our own choosing. Wait I’ll go find a picture.
But Tanishi’d never be able to meet him. Not only because Itsuki was all the way in Chiba and Tanishi was in Okinawa but because Itsuki would probably recognize that he was from Higa. And as sweet as Itsuki was, Tanishi got the impression he held grudges.
