Title: Snapshot of a Self Portrait

Rating: PG
Pairing: Chitose/Tachibana
Summary: Tachibana knows it really isn't fair to let Fudomine beat up the street court kids, but they don't have anyone else to play... until a mysterious hippy arrives.
Tachibana stifled a smirk as he watched his team decimate the street courts. He might have stopped being their coach officially, but they would never stop being his team. Watching Shinji run circles around his opponent, not literally, Tachibana realized it was probably unfair of him to have released Fudomine's second years on the street courts for practice. With such a small and closely-knit team though it was difficult for them to only practice amongst themselves, they needed new faces across the net now and again. Still the team had grown so much that playing on the street courts was nearly useless.
Maybe he should talk to Tezuka about setting something up with Seigaku for next year. Though he should leave that to Kamio and whoever was captain at Seigaku now.
"Aww, they're adorable Kippei! You should be proud." A pointed chin pressed into Tachibana's shoulder and surprised Tachibana nearly punched Chitose in the jaw. "Whoa! Violence is never the answer Kippei."
"…." Struck momentarily speechless Tachibana stared at Chitose, sliding his gaze from the others covered feet to covered head. "You're wearing shoes." He wasn't sure if he was more surprised by Chitose's sudden appearance, or the fact that Chitose had ditched his geta and home made shirt for shabby looking tennis shoes and a red tee shirt that hung strangely on his large frame. He was also wearing a large pair of aviator style sunglasses, and an ugly hat that smashed his hair down in a way reminiscent of Higa's vice captain.
"…Chitose." Was all Tachibana could manage after a few moments of silence. Tachibana wanted to ask why the other was here, and why he was wearing shoes, and how the hell Chitose had found him…
Chitose grinned, sliding the glasses down his nose so he could looked at Tachibana over the rim. It looked utterly ridiculous. "Don't say my name too loud Kippei! I'm under cover."
For someone undercover Chitose sure attracted a lot of attention. Tachibana knew from the way the hair on the back of his neck stood up that most of his team had noticed and was moving in their direction.
Chitose held up his hand to forestall whatever Tachibana was about to say. "You can call me Bigi Chinko, that way no one will know it's me."
Tachibana choked. "I am not calling you that!" In his dreams, Tachibana responded in a deep manly voice, the same voice he used around his team, but in reality Tachibana knew that it came out in a chocked gasp. "That's the name of your favorite porn star you pervert!"
Not that Tachibana had ever watched porn with Chitose.
"You're so cruel, Kippei." Chitose reached over to poke the middle of Tachibana's forehead, right above the mole. There was an indignant squawk from behind him, and Tachibana hoped that someone grabbed Kamio before he started foaming at the mouth. "So, you taking a break from studying for your entrance exams?"
"…yes." T achibana frowned, something nagging him about Chitose's questions, his sudden appearance, and the fact that Seigaku's entrance tests were tomorrow. They were loosing several key members of their team in the next year, though not Inui or Fuji, and with Tezuka having transferred away to repair the damage in his arm Seigaku was looking for someone to fill the spot they had planned for Tezuka.
"It's good to relax the day before." Chitose nodded, taking off his sunglasses and placing them in Tachibana's pocket, his long fingers lingering inside, brushing Tachibana's thigh through the fabric. "Though I'm sure Seigaku'll snag you no matter what the scores are."
Tachibana's brows furrowed to hide his embarrassment, and excitement, at Chitose's intimacy. "Wait, how did you know Seigaku's exams are tomorrow."
Chitose tugged his hat down further over his face so that only the tip of his nose and his wide grin showed. "Why do you think I'm undercover? Shiraishi'd kill me if he knew!"
Rolling his eyes Tachibana manhandled Chitose so the other was facing his team. "I'll let you sleep on the couch, if you play everyone." Tachibana watched the faces on his team light up all at once, and he almost hid from the unabashed worship in their eyes. He knew it meant a lot to them, both playing someone who'd made it to National's twice, but also because Chitose was Tachibana's former rival.
Chitose appeared like he might renege and hide but Tachibana propelled him onto a quickly cleared court. "Ishida first. I trust you played his brother."
Chitose blinked as someone snatched his hat away and a tennis racket was placed in his hands. Tachibana watched as he tested the grip, and knew the sly half grin that slipped over Chitose's face was because Chitose knew the racket was his.
"Yeah, I played Gin a lot during practice sessions." Tachibana had to squash the mental image of Chitose attempting to return one of the elder Ishida's hadokyuu's. Chitose was so freaking skinny, his style of tennis wasn't about power, and power players were Chitose's weakness. Not because of lack of skill, but Tachibana had seen an upperclassmen at Shishigaku nearly break Chitose's wrist during their first year. And then there was Tachibana's injury to him…
"Good." Stifling any niggling sense of guilt, they'd dealt with that issue already, Tachibana seated himself on the coaching bench on Ishida's side. "Ishida will serve first."
Still a bit bewildered by the fast pace everything was moving at Chitose grinned and settled back on the court. Tachibana rolled his eyes even as Ishida bent back to serve. Chitose had always been bewildered when Tachibana bossed him around but he loved it, and if they were going to go to school together next year Chitose was going to have to get used to it again.
Chitose moaned as he flopped onto the Tachibana family's house. "God, I'm so sore Kippei. Your kids are animals!" An poked her head out from the kitchen, waving at Tachibana before disappearing back inside. Since she didn't come out and start bugging them Tachibana assumed that their parents weren't home and An had made dinner.
"They're getting better all the time." Chitose had almost lost some of those matches. Almost.
"You're telling me." Chitose levered himself up on the couch before snagging the end of his shirt and fanning himself. "God, last time I saw the Ibu brat he wasn't that good. You said he's a tensai right?"
Tachibana attempted to manfully ignore the way Chitose's shirt stuck to his sweaty chest, or the way the billowing shirt caused Chitose's flat stomach to peek into view. "He's a genius. I expect next year he'll be even better." Next years junior high games would be interesting to see. Tachibana hoped that the highschool tennis circuit wouldn't keep him too busy to come back and watch them.
"Hey, Kippei." Chitose lazily pocked Tachibana in the knee. "All your kids can play doubles right?"
Not sure what he was agreeing to by saying yes, Tachibana nodded. Chitose's grin was almost as blinding as Fudomine's bright shining eyes.
"Cool. We're going to have to get our doubles game up to par then if we want to keep practicing them."
"Wh-" Tachibana blinked. He'd forgotten, as much as Chitose would have to get used to bossing him around, he would have to get used to Chitose's spontaneity. "We've never played doubles!"
"So?" Chitose hopped off the couch as if ten seconds ago he hadn't been dying of exhaustion. "It'll be fun! Hey An-chan! Whatcha cooking?" Chitose bounded into the kitchen, and Tachibana winced as he heard a clatter and a small shriek.
"Chitose-kun! You're going to… don't touch that! NII-SAN!"
Tachibana sighed and dragged himself into the kitchen to save dinner from destruction, and Chitose from death by a spoon wielding An.
