Oishi had just assumed everyone had forgotten. It was not as if Oishi advertised his birthday after all.

In fact Oishi couldn’t care less about his birthday! Or that was what he told himself when he received no cards, no presents, not even a simple ‘happy birthday’ from anyone at Seigaku. It didn’t matter, his birthday was just a day like any other day, why should people pay attention to it? His mother had made him a special dinner, taking time off her work at the children’s shelter, and his father had come home early from work, and even his uncle Akitaka had stopped over.

 

Oishi shouldn’t expect anything from his friends.

 

Feeling his muscles ache after practice Oishi pushed open the clubroom door. Tezuka had called him up to Ryuuzaki’s office to talk, meaning Tezuka listened and Oishi prattled, and by now everyone should have left. Pushing open the clubroom door and expecting nothing but silence and the promise of a good shower Oishi was surprised at the sudden burst of confetti that exploded in his face.

 

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” The regulars cheered, and Oishi found himself shuttled into the clubroom, being seated on the bench and a cup of punch placed in his hand.

 

“You should clean up before Tezuka sees this.” Was the first thing Oishi found himself saying. He couldn’t believe Tezuka would authorize the use of the clubroom for an impromptu party.

 

“Tezuka knows! He let us!” Eiji cheered, handing Oishi a cupcake. “It’s your birthday! Or it was, anyway, stop worrying!”

 

“Eiji wanted to tell you yesterday.” Fuji’s smile was amused as he handed Oishi a small present. “But he had planned for a party today and we couldn’t let him ruin the surprise.” Oishi knew he was grinning like an idiot, but he was allowed. It was still sort of his birthday.
