Fuji isn't Tsubame when they meet that first time and Eiji isn't Neko-chan. Hyotei Capital has two forces of good, Atobe, who rules with an iron fist, money, and deals just on the right side of the law, and Foresight, a superhero who could see the future. Eiji had gotten several photos of Foresight during his time at the Daily En and of course everyone got plenty of changes to take pictures of Atobe. What Eiji really wanted though was pictures of something shocking. A supervillain plot, corporate scandal… just something amazing. Something that would make his career.
He'd gotten scolded by Foresight more than once for snooping and also by Tezuka Kunimitsu, his coworker and often the reporter who wrote up the stories that accompanied Eiji's pictures. Tezuka was a snooper too though, Eiji was always running into him on site.
Fuji wasn't Tsubame at the time, he didn't work for Atobe, and he had only just moved into Hyotei Capital. He'd set himself up as a socialite, although no one knew where his money came from. Eiji had smelled a story the first time they'd met.
Fuji was photogenic. The camera loved him and he didn't seem to have a bad side. Or a dark side. Or… any side at all. He seemed so flat, obviously an act.
"Have you ever read the story of Peter Pan?" Fuji asked, his feet dangling off the side of one of Atobe's buildings. Eiji is sitting a foot away from the edge. He's a daredevil, yeah, but that's a LONG drop.
He doesn't have powers yet. He hasn't had that mishap with one of Atobe's secret projects. It'll happen a year from now in the basement of the very building they're sitting on, Eiji's hand slipping from Fuji's grip and Foresight's shout echoing off the walls.
"Peter Pan?" Eiji scoots closed to the edge and glances over. "You're not thinking you can fly, are you Fuji? Because not even you would look pretty splattered across the pavement."
Fuji chuckled, his fingers flexing on the rough stone edge. "I'm not thinking I can fly Eiji." Fuji took a deep breath and tilted his head back to stare up at the sky, up at the stars that no one could see because of Hyotei's bright lights. "It's the second star to the right, right?"
"I think?" Eiji grows more worried by the second. Fuji looks unearthly backwashed by the bright lights of Hyotei's capital. The red light on the outside of the stairwell casts a hellish glow to Fuji's hair. "Why?"
"What would you say if I told you I came from Neverland, Eiji?" Fuji's eyes are open, that unearthly color capturing Eij with a glance. "That I could fly and I'll stay young forever?"
It's one of the first true things Eiji's heard Fuji say. It's the closest story to the truth Fuji has yet to tell him. "I'd say you had a little too much to drink at Atobe's fundraiser!" Eiji stands up and brushes the dust off his ass and knees. "C'mon Fuji! Let's head back! I bet they still have appetizers!" Eiji's camera dangles around his neck and weights him forward.
Another reason not to approach the edge.
Fuji's fingers grip the edge tightly before he lets go. Eiji's reaches out to grab him, scared for a second that Fuji will fall forward. Instead Fuji scoots back, takes Eiji's hand and stands. "They're probably out of pigs in a blanket by now, Eiji."
