It is Rokudo Mukuro's age that gets Dino hung up. Fifteen, when he attacks Tsuna. Younger still when he commits all of those heinous crimes. And because of that he is sentenced to a life of pain and suffering, locked in a cold dark cell in the bowels of the Vendicare prison. Dino knows that there is no reason to feel pity for a boy who is more of a beast than a man. But still, fifteen years old. When Dino was fifteen he was wrestling with the life laid out in front of him, the idea of being a mafia boss, suffering from the pain of bruised knees and battered elbows.

Tsuna is not much younger than Mukuro.

It takes five years from Tsuna's return from the future for Tsuna to gain enough clout to be able to trade with the Vendice. It takes five years for Tsuna to find something to trade, and to begin maneuvering things around. It takes another year (six and a half years since the original incarceration) for matters to settle and for Rokudo Mukuro to be freed.

"Don't forget what Rokudo Mukuro has done." Reborn had once told Tsuna, words that Tsuna did not heed. Still, even if his charge is determined to self-destruct, Reborn is equally determined to protect him.

"He'll need a place to stay to rehabilitate. Somewhere away from the family." Reborn says to Dino. And Dino, who encouraged Tsuna to free Mukuro because deep down Dino cannot believe that any child is a killer, agrees.

Rokudo Mukuro looks waifish, curled up in an overlarge arm chair and staring out a window of the Cavallone family's summer home. The sea can be heard if one listens hard enough, waves crashing into rocks. Mukuro's gaze is clouded, drugs and pain and maybe something else. The Vendicare have done their best to neuter him.

"Are you hungry?" Dino asks, because he needs something to break the stilted frozen silence that sits between them. Chrome arrives tomorrow, with Chikusa and Ken in tow. Dino expects the silence to become more strained after that, more painful. He doubts his presence will be welcome in his summer home, despite the fact that he has to stay. Mukuro is dangerous.

Mukuro's limbs are brittle and thin, his veins are bright blue under translucent skin. "I don't think I've eaten a real meal in six years." Mukuro's smile is knife-edged in more ways than one, his face thin and his cheeks sunken. Dark rings circle his eyes. Rokudo stands then, and pushes a priceless antique vase off a table. Dino watches the vase fall, and doesn't bother to stop it. He doesn't even flinch when it shatters against the wooden floor. Mukuro looks from the shattered pieces to Dino, waiting, expectant.

It's not the expectation of a child who has done something naughty, it's the expectation of a sulky teenager testing the boundaries.

"I never liked that vase to begin with." Dino says cheerfully. "And by the way, I've been meaning to remodel this home for a while."

Mukuro's lips tug downwards, almost a pout, before he turns the edges back up into a smile. "Then you won't mind if I destroy it."

"I'll even give you the sledgehammer." Dino pauses. "After lunch."
