If you told Kaito that he would be sad when Kadoya Tsukasa died, he would have denied it. If you had told Kaito months ago that he would be sad when Kadoya Tsukasa died, he would have shot you, and then told your corpse you were nuts. Not that Kaito had ever actually killed someone (although people had died because he had stolen their treasure, but they never utilized their treasures properly in the first place which was why Kaito stole them) but he would at least shoot in your general direction and expect you to dodge.
Or die. It's not like your life mattered to him.
But Tsukasa's life… Tsukasa's life mattered. At first it was because Kaito wanted to steal Tsukasa's life away. When he had stumbled across Kadoya Tsukasa, Decade, nearly-lifeless and without memories of his past or present Kaito had pointed a gun at his head and been tempted.
So tempted.
Decade would destroy the worlds. Tsukasa would destroy the worlds. And yet… it had been worthless to steal Tsukasa's life away from him there. The life of the amnesiatic Tsukasa was useless to Kaito. It would serve no purpose (except preventing the joining and eventual destruction of the worlds) and no one would hear about it. No one would know except Kaito.
And while Kaito did keep under the radar, he liked it when he was noticed. It made him preen. Kaito preferred being looked at properly to not being looked at.
Kaito had given Tsukasa the camera, the stupid pink one he constantly carried around, and booted him into the next world. Somehow, Tsukasa had ended up falling in with Hikari Photo Studios and Natsumi. Natsumi (Natsumikan, Natsumelon) woke something up in Tsukasa that changed him, made him care about people and things and forming bonds. Turned the part of Tsukasa that recognized a person's weak points and targeted them into something that recognized a person's weak points and strengthened them. (This was why Natsumelon ranked as a B-rank treasure to Kaito, while Onedera-kun sat at a below average C-) Natsumi changed Tsukasa's life so that it was not just a treasure…
It was the Ultimate treasure. Tsukasa was a rider who could make other riders strong, and the other riders just could not figure out how to use him. They all tried to destroy him at first (like Kaito had) but eventually fell to his… whatever it was that made Tsukasa himself. (It was in no way shape or form charisma.) So stealing that away… Stealing the ultimate treasure would be Kaito's greatest work.
And no one was going to steal Tsukasa's life away but him. Kaito would not stand for it.
