Yanagi ground the southernwood up in the mortar and pestle. The knowledge of plants, what grew where, what could be used, how to prepare it, all of that was part of the training of a Government Exorcist. Some people, like Yanagi's old school friend Inui, specialized in it. Others, like Yanagi, specialized in many things. While grinding the plant down into a fine, fine dust, Yanagi studiously ignored the demon crouched in the corner of the shop.
"Oi." Niou abandoned the shadowy corner of the already shadowy shop and stalked across the dry wooden floors. If a fire struck Yanagi's shop, it would go up in a second… but it would take a great many valuable artifacts with it, and if it's destruction was caused by a demonic attack it's attackers would never draw another breath. Yanagi had more than just incense collected in his shop. He also had anti-fire protections planted along the walls. "That stuff stinks."
Yanagi did not bother to look up when Niou plunked himself down on the counter, right next to Yanagi's working utensils. If it wasn't for Niou's contract holder, Niou would have vaporized before he stepped in the door. …no, that wasn't fair. Niou might have made it several steps inside the shop before the spells kicked in. Niou was a powerful trickster demon, held back only from wreaking destruction and havoc by the will of his master and the wording of Yagyuu's spell.
Yagyuu was an excellent example of the offensive fighters of the Exorcist corp.
"To you, it might." Yanagi joined the southernwood with labdanum and kneaded it in. After that, he began forming the incense pellets. They could be burned to drive out demons, or other dark spirits. "To me, it doesn't."
"Tch." Niou drummed the back of his heels on the side of the counter, rattling the numerous drawers that ran along it. Some of the drawers continued to rattle after the others, and Yanagi shot Niou a slightly exasperated look.
Niou grinned. "So that's where you keep the dangerous stuff, puri~?"
Yanagi drew his finger over the seal set into the countertop, triggering the spell so that the rattling quieted. "Perhaps that is where I keep the annoying things, and where you'll end up when Yagyuu's patience runs out."
"Yagyuu's never gonna get rid of me." Niou smirked. "I'm too good a partner."
Setting aside the incense pellets Yanagi nodded at Yagyuu as the other man made his way down from the second level of the shop. "Whatever you want to believe, Niou."
Niou hopped off the counter when he spotted Yagyuu, traipsing his way over to the taller man and draping himself over Yagyuu's shoulders. Yagyuu held a brown paper wrapped parcel in his hands. A book, judging by the shape. "Did you find what you needed?" Yanagi asked, already knowing the answer.
"This." Yagyuu put the book down, and Yanagi pulled back the paper only to read the name and ascertain the price. "And I was wondering if you had a catsfoot."
"Ca-" Yanagi looked up sharply, looked past Yagyuu's blank and unemotional face at Niou's smirking one. "That's a powerful item, Yagyuu, and a pricy one." A catsfoot could give the wearer 'nine lives', like a cat. However it also drained the wearer of their energy once it's purpose was through. To wear a catsfoot meant you were dealing with something so dangerous that you were sure it would kill you at least once. It was an item that no one but government exorcists were allowed access too, and even then careful watch was kept on those who used it.
It did not stop the black market from selling one or two, here or there.
"I know." Yagyuu shook Niou off, and the demon stepped to the side, not touching Yagyuu, but invading the cold man's personal bubble like no human ever would. Yagyuu was nearly demonic in his own right, and had been a cold and hard to read man before he contracted Niou. After that, Yagyuu closed himself off more, not wishing to give the trickster demon any leverage to use. "I can pay for it."
"I do not doubt you can." Yanagi looked Yagyuu and Niou over. "I will have to get it out of storage, it will be ready for you tomorrow."
