Jun. 13th, 2009 03:24 pm"Are you going to take that off?" Spanner asks, shocking Shouichi out of his zone. Shouichi is in the middle of working on their mobile unit, his mind tied up in the rules of Choice, and machinery. Shouichi ducks out of the crawlspace he had been working in, a soldering iron held carefully in one hand.
"What?" Shouichi stares in confusion at Spanner. "Take what off?" Was Spanner talking about his clothes? They had been working for four days straight and Shouichi would admit they were both starting to smell. Shouichi's hair felt greasy and frizzy, and while Spanner's didn't look a hair out of place every so often he ended up scratching at his scalp. Neither of them is firing on all cylinders. Their conversations at meal times have consisted of the sounds of slurping and chewing. Neither of them has started a real conversation, or said much to each other beyond 'pass the ____, thank you' or 'did you _____, oh alright'.
Spanner scratches at his scalp, and then pries the lollipop stick out of his mouth. He's been trying to make his lollipops last, not consuming them one after the other like he normally would. "That," Spanner motions with the stick at Shouichi's hand, "are you going to take it off?"
Shouichi frowns, confused, and looks down at his hand. What is…
"Oh."
The blue jewel of his sun ring doesn't wink up at him, it doesn't shine, it looks rather dull in the makeshift fluorescent lighting. Shouichi flexes his hand, the ring looking a part of it all. He'd forgotten he had that on. Shouichi didn't wear rings regularly, he didn't like jewelry, but he'd forgotten…. It just felt so natural. If he's honest he will admit that it is one more thing, like the white pants he has yet to change out of, that connects him still to the Millefiore, to Byakuran.
The ring box is in his jacket pocket, and his coat lies in a crumpled engagement of white and black over by his machine. Slowly Shouichi walks over to his coat and picks it up, fishes for the ring box. Leaving an A rank ring unattended would be remiss. Shouichi rubs his thumb over the boxes edge. He knows that Spanner is watching him. There are advantages to wearing the ring, or to carrying it with him. It is A-rank, even if it is not a Mare ring, and they are in a war. Shouichi could use it to defend himself, to defend others.
But there are rules to Choice, Shouichi knows this, and his mind skips over the thought of one of the girl's ending up as 'non-elemental'. Without a ring… he might count, if such an 'element' is chosen. Shouichi slips his ring off and places it in the box, then drops the box on top of his jacket and cape. One more tie severed.
He'll return to the machine later in order to facilitate sending the Vongola home, and dealing with the Vongola brought back to their time. At that time… if the ring is still there (and it's not about to go anywhere) he might pick it up again. You could never be too sure when you'll need an A-rank ring.
