When Oishi dragged himself up to his modest apartment all he wanted to do was feed his fish and sleep.
Today had been long, and hard, and Oishi just kept wishing it would go faster. Instead his day just seemed to get harder, and kept at a slow, annoyingly steady pace. Except every time Oishi thought he had a handle on things something would jolt him and his thoughts and plans would be scattered all over the place again. Reaching into his bag Oishi fumbled around for his angel fish keychain.
The keychain had been a gift from Eiji last year. It was big enough that Oishi could find it in his bag, but it was not too big, and it had a flashlight in its mouth that activated when you squeezed it. Oishi had been thankful for the birthday gift.
Birthday. That rang a bell.
“Birthday?” Oishi groaned, pushing his door open and dropping his stuff inside. “Who’s birthday is it?” Closing the door behind him Oishi shuffled into his apartment. His first action was to pick up his calendar, and his second was to press the play button on his answering machine. Oishi knew he should check his cellphone too, but it was in his bag and that was by the door and right now Oishi did not feel like going to get it.
“Who’s birthday…” There was nothing on the calendar, and Oishi flipped to the back to check dates. No, he didn’t see anyone on the thirtieth… Who’s birthday?
“Oishi!” Eiji’s cheerful voice rang from Oishi’s tiny answering machine. Eiji always sounded like his voice should be emitting from an answering machine two sizes bigger, and of course Eiji always made Oishi’s apartment feel too small. Eiji was just that energetic. “Oishi we’re at the sushiya, where are you? Eh? Fuji? What? No give me the-”
Oishi frowned. Sushiya? Eiji? Was he meeting Eiji at a sushiya tonight? Who’s Sushiya? Kawamura Sushi?
“Oishi.” Fuji’s mellow voice always sent shivers down Oishi’s spine, there was just something creepy about it. “Taka-san is losing business tonight for this party and you, the guest of honor, are late.”
There was the sound of a brief scuffle, and then Eiji’s voice was back on the machine. “Yeah, birthday boy, come on down!”
The answering machine beeped, signaling the end of the message, and Oishi laughed.
Oh right.
It was his birthday today.
