Shishido had realized the first time he met Ohtori and Hiyoshi that the two needed to seriously relax.
Ohtori was polite to a fault, while Hiyoshi was polite up to a certain point and then would degenerate into insults, grunts, monosyllabic answers, and significant looks. Hiyoshi was so much more entertaining to verbally bait, while with Ohtori that was the totally wrong tactic. Ohtori had this three foot bubble of air he liked to keep, and Shishido had decided that the way to get Ohtori to loosen up was to pop that bubble.
Shishido would never admit it to anyone but getting kicked off the team had done him a lot of good. It had made him open his eyes and realize he wasn't gods gift to tennis playing losers, and had gotten him his doubles position with Ohtori. This meant that Shishido had the ability to work more on getting Ohtori to relax. It did distance him from Hiyoshi, but Hiyoshi was a lot less difficult to get a reaction out of. Shishido figured he could take a break from attempting to remove the stick from Hiyoshi's ass.
Shishido had basked in his brilliance when he realized one of the things that irritated the two underclassmen was calling them by their first names. Ohtori had blushed, confused, and attempted to get Shishido to call him Ohtori again. Shishido, of course, didn't see any reason to. Ohtori was an underclassman, subordinate to Shishido, and Shishido's doubles partner, so he was close to Shishido. Why not call him Choutarou? Ohtori hadn't been able to come up with a good reason so he had let the matter drop. Shishido'd loved watching as Ohtori went from twitching everytime Shishido called him Choutarou, to gradually relaxing into the casual name use.
Getting Hiyoshi to let Shishido call him Wakashi had been more difficult. Mainly because after polite requests didn't work Hiyoshi had told Shishido to screw off, and Shishido had told him that he'd really much prefer to screw him. Shishido should have ducked Hiyoshi's punch, but something else would probably have happened; Hiyoshi hadn't been raised by martial arts experts for nothing.
Graduation had brought interesting reactions. Shishido had expected Ohtori to cry, he'd learned that the space Ohtori tried to keep between himself and other people was all about protection, Ohtori just got way too emotionally attached. Ohtori had cried, a lot, enough that he'd gained puffy red eyes and had to be taken to the bathroom to wash up. There they'd found Hiyoshi splashing his face with cold water and looking thoroughly guilty. One joke about Hiyoshi missing him had gotten Shishido barreling straight into his jaw. Ohtori had grabbed Hiyoshi's arm though, successfully stopping him.
Ohtori and Hiyoshi had a curious friendship. They didn't talk much, or touch much, or even stand in the other's vicinity all that often. But when they **were** talking, or touching, or looking at each other it was like Hiyoshi and Ohtori just clicked. Shishido felt like an outsider, like he was watching what should have been Hyotei's doubles one instead of him and Ohtori. Then Hiyoshi and Ohtori separated, both straightening their appearance, Hiyoshi met Shishido's eyes when he apologized, but then vanished out the bathroom door.
Shishido was already making plans for the brief break he'd have before he started at high school. He'd need to get Hiyoshi and Ohtori together a lot more often. Shishido was pretty sure they'd all just had a breakthrough.
