"Have you ever noticed that captain's have unusual relationships with their geniuses?" Chitose asked, flopping into the seat beside Shiraishi. It was time for dinner, so they were off the courts, and off the clock, and could finally talk to each other. Some of the locals who were close enough to walk to the camp went home for dinner, and the Tachibana's had offered to let Chitose stay over, but Chitose thought it'd suck to leave Shiraishi alone. Plus all that time with Kippei would drive Chitose to distraction.
"What?" Shiraishi looked up from poking at the chicken curry. Chitose shook his head, betting that Shiraishi had been attempting to figure out if the chicken really WAS chicken, and even if it was chicken if it had any nutritional value. Shiraishi worried about stuff like that.
"I said, have you ever noticed that captain's have unusual relationships with their geniuses." Chitose didn't bother looking over his curry, he just shoveled it into his mouth. It was like looking at sausage before you ate it, your brain started to wonder what those little black spots really were. "You know, like you and me."
"Our relationship is unusual?" Shiraishi started picking at his rice instead, his eyes wandering around the hall. The middle schoolers usually grouped together, but there were always empty tables since they'd kicked out the high schoolers. Chitose and Shiraishi sat at a half full table, with conversations on either side of them loud enough so that no one would bother listening to them.
"Think about Tezuka and Fuji. So, they're rivals correct? But Tezuka focuses on having Fuji improve, instead of gauging their growth against each other. Also Tezuka sets himself up as a measuring stick for Echizen's improvement. Then there's Yukimura and that Kirihara kid. Yukimura's opponents are the guys Kirihara wants to play, and beat, even though it's pretty obvious it's too soon for him. And Kirihara's actions are dictated by Yukimura. Atobe and that Oshitari guy, constantly bickering, and Atobe's always talking down to him, but at the same time it's obvious that if Atobe HAS to pick someone on his team to hang with, it's Oshitari." Chitose spoke around a mouthful of curry mush. Chitose wasn't actually sure it was curry, there was no flavor to it. Maybe it was just mushy chicken in brown sauce. Mmmm, brown sauce. Like that unidentifiable mystery brown sauce from Chinese restaurants. Shiraishi was going to spend the rest of camp *starving*. Maybe Chitose could ask Kippei to bring food?
"…" Shiraishi tentatively shoveled half the rice into his mouth, deciding that it at least wouldn't kill him. Hopefully they didn't use pesticides or something, Shiraishi'd have to commit organic suicide later. "But isn't Kin technically my genius, not you?"
Chitose grinned, a piece of chicken stuck between his two front teeth. "Oh come on, would you call your relationship with Kin *normal*? He thinks you have a poison arm, dude."
