and... we move on! LE GASP.

Long distance mental contact was not Saeki’s strong suit.
Long distance psychic communication was sketchy for the best of psychics, there had to be training, strength, and a level of familiarity on both sides. Jyousei Shounan, a military owned complex, had the ability to contact other psychics across the galaxy, but Jyousei Shounan’s psychics were rigorously trained from childhood and had technology running throughout their body. Saeki had heard that there were any number of powerful psychics who had no problem with long distance communication; Seigaku Station’s Tezuka, Rikkai’s three demons, and Shitenhouji’s (formerly Kyuushu’s) Chitose Senri.

Still, Saeki knew his strong points, and long distance contact was not one of them.

Settling down on his meditation mat Saeki took a long drink of his favorite booze before opening his mind out and beginning to send the call. It was going to be a long wait.

Fuji…. Fuji…. Fuji….

A half an hour after Saeki had started, and about five minutes before he was ready to give up, Saeki felt a tentative brush of power against his mind.

Sae-san? Are you dreaming of me?

Saeki grinned, only Fuji. No, I’m trying to contact you. I have been attempting to get in touch since mid-day.

There was a definite flavor of amusement to Fuji’s mental touch, and the power brushing Saeki’s mind increased, making their communication much clearer. Mid-day your time is breakfast at Seigaku. You know I am never up that early.

I had hoped you had missed your bedtime and had yet to go to sleep. Saeki took another long drag of the alcohol, opening his mind up wider to Fuji’s touch. Booze always made psychic communication easier, though too much booze made it impossible to maintain. I have a problem.

So I see. I was expecting you to contact me sooner, though through different means.

Fuji had probably been expecting a call from Saeki since Ojii’s death. I was busy before. Now though I cannot trust that my lines are not tapped. In fact Saeki was positive that they were. Hyotei has stepped in.

Mmm. Fuji paused to think, making Saeki feel like there was a clock’s gears ticking away, just beyond his reach. Hyotei are a pain in the ass. I am guessing your investigation with Ojii was put off then? They no doubt found the assassins and put them to use.

Saeki grimaced. That is what I am afraid of. The assassins still have Itsuki.

And what do you need me to do Sae-san?

Saeki picked up his folder of materials. What do you know about a group called Higa?

The talk went back and forth from there, Saeki trading valuable information about the case while Fuji relayed information he had picked up about Higa. It was not much but it would do. Fuji, about -

There was the sensation of an eclipse, as if Fuji’s power had suddenly been blotted out by something. Fuji? Saeki searched for Fuji’s familiar intangible touch and found nothing but cold space. Retreating back into himself Saeki frowned. That had most definitely been a cut off, not just Fuji dropping the communication, and Saeki felt fine so his side of things was alright. Someone or something had interfered.

“Hyotei does not have that power…” Saeki gathered up his materials and headed for Aoi’s.
