Dino Calvallone belonged to the daylight. He was the tenth generation of the Calvallone hunters, just like Tsuna was the tenth Vongola. Dino's blonde hair was just the right shade to glow gold under the sun, and his honey brown eyes always sparkled. Dino's skin was a pale golden tan, and his teeth flashed bright white when he smiled at you. The image of a bronze god was ruined by the two sharp canines in Dino's teeth, and the way moonlight made him look pale under his tan.
Dino ruffled Tsuna's hair with his death cold hand. It was a dark and cloudy night, but they were inside so Dino's brown eyes did not glow a demonic gold. Dino had spent twenty years under a vampire's tender care before Dino's hunter family had found him. Dino was 'made' vampire, different from a pure blooded born vampire, or a half-blood born vampire like Hibari. Pure-blooded born vampires were conceived only through the use of heavy spell-casting, and even half-blooded vampires needed a spell or two to bring them to full term and keep them alive. Made vampires were humans that had been bitten, cultured, and then killed by a Master vampire.
All vampires were dangerous, few could control the animal impulse to feed and kill. Made and half-blood vampires were more likely to lose control than a pure-blooded born vampire.
Tsuna had never asked about Dino's history, or how he had come to gain control of himself, he was sure that the first Vongola had written a book about it. Tsuna did not want to know.
"Dino-san." Tsuna shuffled out from under Dino's hand and Dino let his arm drop casually to his side. He smiled like nothing Tsuna did bothered him, even though Tsuna knew Dino could smell his uneasiness. Dino only looked a few years older than Tsuna, but he had been a compatriot of Tsuna's much-great-grandfather, it made Tsuna uneasy. "What brings you here?"
Dino stuck his hands in the pockets of his cargo pants. Tsuna had noticed that some vampires and long-lived creatures adapted rockily to new centuries, while others just went with it. Dino seemed the type to just go with the flow, his coat was a khaki color with fur trip, and his baggy cargo pants were matched by a never ending stream of slogan tees. "I was wondering if you had seen Kyouya."
Tsuna looked at Dino's face, avoiding Dino's eyes. It wasn't just that a vampire's eyes could be creepy, they could trap you in a trance if the vampire wished. Not that Dino would, but you never knew. "Hibari-san? I haven't seen him since…" Tsuna frowned. A week ago? Maybe more? Tsuna preferred to avoid Hibari, a violent half-blood who had been defending Namimori before Tsuna knew there was anything to defend it against. "I'm not sure."
"What's this about, Dino?" Reborn announced himself by kicking Dino in the face. "Lose another student?"
Dino rubbed at his chin where a bruise was blooming. Tsuna always thought Reborn's strength was monstrous. When you could kick a vampire easily 5 times your height in the face and have it bruise instantly…
"You say that like I have so many, Reborn… no, I was in Italy dealing with clan business." Dino was head of the Calvallone hunter's clan, and had been for years. But more than that Dino often brought in half-blood vampires or made vampires in need of help, as well as lycanthropes, witches, warlocks, and other preternaturally gifted misfits. It did not make him popular among the white-haired traditionalists (who were younger than Dino) but it was how Dino worked. "I heard about the string of bloody murders here though and…"
"You should have been here, stupid Dino." Reborn scolded. "Did you miss his coming of age?"
Dino held up his hands in front of him, as if to defend himself from Reborn. Tsuna glanced between the two. He was missing something. "He wouldn't tell me how old he was! I can't find records on him! By my estimate he should have had another year at least before his powers ripened, and you know I've been keeping a close watch on him anyway."
Reborn pulled out his gun and shot at Dino, the shot only missed because of Dino's preternatural reflexes. Tsuna had heard that Dino had been clumsy when he was a human, there was none of that in the man now. "Stupid. We'll have to find him before he kills more."
Dino rubbed at his head. "That's the thing. If he was just rampaging he wouldn't be hard to find… but he's not. I think someone got him. They haven't bonded with him yet, I'd know if they had, so I don't think it's another vampire…"
Tsuna blinked. He did not know what a coming of age was, or bonding, or any of that, but he understood that someone had taken Hibari. The only person he knew stronger than Hibari with an unnatural interest in the half-vampire was… "Mukuro."
