Shouichi is so young when he receives his first bouquet of flowers from Byakuran. He is too young to understand what it means; the flowers, the special attention, the glint in Byakuran’s eye. Shouichi does know that receiving flowers from someone who is your superior (very much his superior at that point) is strange and should be treated with caution. Shouichi has seen the news reports and read the papers, he knows what ‘sexual harassment’ is, and Shouichi has no doubt that if Byakuran chose to sexually harass him Shouichi would have to abandon his research and run back to Japan. Even in Japan, Shouichi feels, he would not be safe.

So, when Byakuran slyly questions if Shouichi knows what the flowers mean Shouichi replies ‘no’ and spends hours and hours, days and days, pouring over books on the meanings of flowers. The first bouquet had consisted of three flowers, apple blossoms, freesia, and lark spur.

A promise, innocence, and beautiful spirit.

So the next time Byakuran asks him if ‘Shou-chan’ knows what the flowers mean (the second bouquet was a small one of Camellias) Shouichi can answer ‘yes’.
