Inui taps his pen absentmindedly against his clip board. He is watching Kaidoh disarm and knock out a number of Their most highly trained operatives. The operatives, however, are only human, and They have poured money into the super human project. Inui has poured elixirs and training into Kaidoh, and it is gratifying to see it all pay off. Kaidoh neatly disarms a man with a submachine gun without being injured, and then uses the butt of the gun to bring the man to the floor.
It would be more gratifying if Inui's mind was focused on Kaidoh.
He can not help thinking about Yanagi. His friend had been staying later and later working on the Akuma project. The Akuma project, a super soldier project involving cloning and bringing a soldier to full term, a soldier bred to be superior to humans. The DNA for the cloning project had been donated by one of Them, a son who had died when he was just a boy. The boy's name had been Akaya, but they never referred to the project by his first name.
Except for Yanagi last night. Inui had dragged Yanagi home and the exhausted man had fallen asleep almost immediately. Inui was sure he had heard Yanagi murmur 'Akaya' in his sleep.
He was sure of it.
"Senpai?" Kaidoh stood in front of Inui, his posture perfect, but his eyes questioning. Kaidoh had been a scrawny young recruit when Inui had gotten him, and now he was a brawny perfect specimen.
Inui clicked his pen. "Perfect, again, Kaidoh. Hit the showers."
Kaidoh smiled at him in a manner which made Inui's heart thump oddly. He would need to get a physical. Now was not the time to develop irregularities.
