Kaneda fumbled for words.
How could they possibly explain away being in the ‘hall of love’? Even to Nomura, who was well known for being obtuse.
“Nomura-senpai.” Yuuta, at least, sounded calm and collected. “Were you meeting someone here?”
“Eh?” Nomura pushed the wet mop back into the janitor’s closet, and leaned against the door to keep it shut. “N-no.”
Kaneda glanced from Yuuta to Nomura, his eyes widening when he realized that Yuuta almost looked… scary. Almost.
“Then you were heading back from meeting with your girlfriend?”
“Tutoring.” Nomura stated quickly. “English tutoring. Er. For extra credit. Um.”
Yuuta gave a short nod. “Nothing to tell Mizuki-san about than.”
Kaneda felt his heart skip a beat. Telling Mizuki-san about any of them sneaking out of the dorms would get them all punished, especially if it was found out that they had been sneaking out to see a girl. Mizuki-san thought that having a girlfriend meant you were not focused on tennis, or your studies.
“Y-Yuuta…” Kaneda stuttered, grabbing his arm. “Come on. We should all get back to our dorm rooms.”
Yuuta gave Nomura a significant glance.
“I’ll be going first than!” Nomura muttered quickly before racing off, the squeak of his soles on the tiles signaling his turning the corner. Yuuta slumped against the wall.
“I thought, for a second, we might have a problem.” Yuuta let out a small smile. “You don’t think he noticed how mussed we are do you?”
“No. I think it was too scared.” Kaneda fussed with his shirt. “Yuuta. You wouldn’t really have told Mizuki-san would you?”
Yuuta’s smile was fake, almost reminiscent of his brother’s. “The early bird gets the worm after all.”
Kaneda shivered, wrapping his arms around himself.
“Eh? Kaneda, you should get back to your room, if you’re cold.” Yuuta placed his hand on Kaneda’s shoulder. “And tell Akazawa-buchou. I won’t be his replacement for much longer.”
